Site of the historic 'Church of the Good Shepherd', Lake Tekapo was one
of the first settlements in the vast Mackenzie basin; a high country plain
situated at the foot of the Southern Alps - New Zealand's largest mountain

The Mackenzie basin was named for the infamous sheep rustler who roamed
the high country sheep stations with his faithful dog.
A statue recognising the contribution of the working sheep dog in the
Mackenzie, stands near the church on the shores of Lake Tekapo.
